Hurricane Season starts next week

ALBANY, GA (WALB)- The 2013 Atlantic Hurricane season will officially start June 1st and experts are calling for an above average season that could be just as bad, if not worse, than last year.  

Following a year that produced Super Storm Sandy, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issuing its 2013 prediction.

"For the six-month hurricane season which will start June 1st NOAA predicts and above normal and possibly an extremely active hurricane season," said Kathryn Sullivan, Acting Commerce Undersecretary.

'Farm to Table' is Lily Pad Center Fundraiser

ALBANY, GA (WALB)-  A Dougherty County rape crisis center hopes to raise $15,000 at a tasty event Thursday night at the Merry Acres Event Center.

 The Lily Pad Center provides support services to more than 300 child victims and roughly 150 adults every year. About two hundred people are expected to show up for the fourth annual 'Farm to Fork' Fundraiser.

Attendees will be fed a southern style meal featuring organic chicken, fresh produce and boiled peanuts, all donated by nearby farmers.

Metro Albany's unemployment rate declines to 8.6% in April

ATLANTA, GA (WALB)-  ATLANTA – The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that metro Albany's unemployment rate declined to 8.6 percent in April, down three-tenths of a percentage point from 8.9 percent in March. The rate was 9.2 percent in April a year ago.

The rate declined as the number of jobs in metro Albany increased by 200 to 61,200, up from 61,000 in March. Most of the growth came in retail trade and state government.

Jobs were unchanged at 61,200 over the year.

WORTH CO., GA (WALB)- Right now, American Red Cross volunteers are at work in Oklahoma staffing shelters and serving meals and helping tornado survivors put their lives back together.

We all know the Red Cross is there during those big disasters. But the emergency to which they respond most is a house fire, and they desperately need volunteers to help.

Seven months ago, a Worth County yard was the site of a 3,200 square foot house. The Jones family hammered every nail during construction.

Oklahoma family reaches out through social media

ALBANY, GA (WALB)-  Some folks in South Georgia frantically tried to get in touch with loved ones who live near the destruction in Oklahoma.

Leesburg's Wendy Mathis has a brother who lives in Oklahoma City and works in Bethany, just 10 miles north of Moore.

She watched the devastation unfold on TV Monday afternoon and began texting her brother. She found out through social media her family was okay.

Oil is down, but gas isn't

BANGKOK (AP) - The price of oil fell Monday ahead of the release later this week of economic data from the U.S. and China, the world's two largest economies, and a speech by the Federal Reserve chief.

Benchmark crude for June delivery was down 55 cents to $95.47 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 86 cents to close at $96.02 a barrel on Friday.
