Dad says child mauled by dog | News
BEN HILL COUNTY, GA- A Ben Hill County boy may have to undergo surgery on his arm after he was mauled by a dog as he watched TV at friend's house.
The dog has been quarantined since the attack on Tuesday to see if it shows more signs of aggression.
Little Jared Rogers likes watching cartoons and playing video games. The 4-year-old was watching cartoons Tuesday at the home of his mother's friend when that family's dog attacked him.
"The dog bit my arm and went to the doctor," he said.
Jared's father Gary got the call his son had been rushed to the E-R. "I walked in and it didn't really look all that bad I just saw puncture wound on the inside of his arm. Then the nurse rolled him over and there was just a big gaping wound where he was attacked by the dog."
The dog is now in quarantine at the Ben Hill County Animal Shelter. The dog, Possibly a Rottweiler/pit bull mix, sank it's teeth into Jared's upper thigh and tore the skin off his arm. The picture is so gruesome we can't show it.
"When I saw it I thought. I'd love to buy that dog right now and have it for myself," said the father.
"I said stop," said Jared, who says he's scared of dogs now.
It took 18 stitches to sew up Jared's arm. If it doesn't heel properly, the wound could require surgery. This dog could be put down if it shows signs aggression.
"If they're going to have them and stuff then they need to assume the responsibility that comes with that and be responsible for the actions of them. If they're vicious and stuff, do away with them," said Mr. Rogers.
Rogers says he's still upset and hopes other parents will make sure they look closely at any potentially dangerous pets their kids could be around. So something like this doesn't happen again.
The City of Fitzgerald has some of the toughest laws in the state on owning a pit bull breed, but this attack happened in the county.
Animal control will decide if the dog will be put down.
